Why European Oak?

European oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petraea) is the most popular species for engineered wood flooring, and for good reason. It’s hard enough to resist wear, stable enough to work well in engineered construction, and beautiful enough to hold its own in any interior.

Understanding Oak Grades

Oak is graded by its visual characteristics — the amount of knot, colour variation, and sapwood present. Common grades include:

  • Prime/AB Select — minimal knots, consistent colour
  • Natural/CD — moderate knots, more colour variation
  • Rustic/EF — larger knots, filled cracks, maximum character

Where Does the Oak Come From?

The best European oak for flooring comes from managed forests in France, Germany, and Eastern Europe. Sanders & Fink sources exclusively from suppliers operating within recognised sustainable forestry frameworks.

Engineered vs Solid

Engineered oak offers the same wear surface as solid oak but with a multi-layer core that provides superior dimensional stability. This makes it compatible with underfloor heating and suitable for installation over concrete subfloors — two things solid oak struggles with.
