Why the Finish Matters

The finish on an engineered wood floor is not just a protective layer — it fundamentally changes how the floor looks, feels, and ages. Two boards from the same oak tree, finished differently, will look like entirely different products.

Understanding finishes helps you make a decision you’ll be happy with for years, not just in the showroom.

Matt Lacquer

Matt lacquer is the most practical finish for most households. It creates a sealed surface that resists stains and moisture better than oil, while maintaining a natural, low-sheen appearance.

All Sanders & Fink Artists Collection boards use an ultra matt lacquer that is almost indistinguishable from an oiled finish to the eye, but significantly easier to maintain day-to-day.

Natural Oil

Oil penetrates the wood rather than sitting on top of it, giving a very natural, tactile finish. Oiled floors feel warmer underfoot and develop a rich patina over time.

The trade-off: oiled floors require periodic re-oiling (typically every 12-18 months in high-traffic areas) and are more susceptible to water marks if spills aren’t wiped up promptly.

Hardwax Oil

Hardwax oil combines the natural feel of oil with added wax for improved surface protection. It’s a popular choice for kitchens and living areas where you want the look of oil with better practical performance.

Which Finish is Right for You?

For most homes, we recommend matt lacquer for its combination of natural appearance and low maintenance. If you love the idea of a floor that develops character over time and you’re willing to maintain it, oil is a beautiful choice.
